View Full Version : (Rephrase) Anyone else geeking themselves in anticipation for the Watchmen movie?

I have every faith in Snyder's abilities. Visuals are everything in this kind of comic book adaptation and that's the one area he always has down, regardless.
There's some stuff that has me worried, like the supposedly different ending of the film, some casting choices, like the woman playing the original Silk Spectre and the lad playing Doctor Manhattan, both of whom are much too young for their respective roles, in my opinion. I'm not entirely sold on Rorschach's voice, either, but hey, it's too early to judge.
Indeed the trailers were awesome, the music was well selected, the imagery surprisingly faithful and in some cases simply mind-blowing. The revamped costumes are mostly well done too. Too bad they cut the Tales of the Black Freighter from the cinema version completely. Oh well, we'll see!

Who isn't geeking out about this movie?
I wouldn't be too worried about the details. The actors don't look too young to me, and Rorschach's voice is pretty much as I imagined it. Tales of the Black Freighter would have taken too much away from the film for casual viewers, especially those who haven't read the novel, so it isn't surprising that it is seeing a dvd release instead.

I am also gearing up for this movie. I havent read the novel in about 10 years....so I am currently re-reading it to bring back the memories and knowledge. I too think Billy Crudup is a little young for Doc Manhattan. Jeffery dean Morgan on the other hand looks like he will own the part of the Comedian. Just a little over a week to go!!!!!

Saw this movie last night at 7PM, thought they did quite a good job of everything. I 'aven't read the novel in a good long while, but it was great. Graphic Novel Rated R for a reason, haha.

Excellent movie. I will be buying the dvd when it comes out. I'm also going to see it again sometime this week. Stayed pretty true to the novel, left some stuff out though. Veidt could have been a little more like the comic, and didn't get to see the "aliens" but still an awesome experience.

I'm still very undecided about how I feel about the film. Some of the changes they made I could understand... but some, not so much. It's hard when dealing with a story that has been one of my favorites ever sense 1988.

Well, you have added a slightly incorect Rorschach quote to your posts... so I'd guess you would say him... but from what I have read from ya so far, I'd say your more like Edward Blake.

Gotta disagree (well, a little bit anyway...)
I am a fan of Daredevil, Ghost Ridder, and Spiderman. In fact, those are 3 of my top 5 marvel titles.
Daredevil was pure crap, as was Ghost Rider. No if's, and's or but's about it. Spider man 3... I see the complaint that many have with it... it tried to do too much at once and got a little 'of track' and silly at some points. However, the first two were so good that I forgive the 3rd just a little bit.
However... even tho Daredevil and Ghost Rider were aweful, AWFUL movies... much worse then Watchmen... (which was not a BAD movie... just... not Watchmen. Not completely.) I went into those films with LOW expectations. I was sure those movies were going to suck, and so I was not surprised.
I cared a LOT more about Watchmen then I did those other titles... Watchmen was such an unbelivably amazing book that it was more important to me that it be right. I followed all the info... and all the signs were good that the movie was going to be GREAT. I let myself have HUGE expectations.
Thus the problem. My expecations were so high... my love for the source material so great... I was let down.

Well, how would you have expected them to cram every little detail of the graphic novel into the movie? I too am a huge fan of the graphic novel, but the movie in no way disappointed me (except for maybe the music, but whatever). I see no way they could have made it better by cramming everything into it without splitting it into two movies, which would have sucked. Thus, what we have retains the messages of the original, just trimmed down.

Obvously you have to make some cuts... as they did with the LotR movies, even tho they made 3 of them.
I would have cut different parts with Watchmen, and NOT cut some parts they did cut... but the way they changed the ending was a huge part of my problem with it.
Also they changed the scene when Rorschach goes to warn Doctor Manhatten and Laurie... altered it drasticly, which changed a lot of the tone. They didn't explore how Laurie hates Rorschach at all, they set up a close working relationship with Doctor Manhattan and Veidt which was not present in the original story, Doctor Manhattan's whole magic memory trips were entirly created for the movie for no reason I can see. They had Dan visit Veidt instead of Rorschach for some reason, they did not explore Veidt much at all and I think he was the one actor who was poorly cast for his role... I did not like him as Veidt at all.
I'm not unrealistic, I know some things had to be cut and chagned to make it work as a movie... I just think they made some wrong choices in that regard and that screwed with the tone/feel of the film for me.
That... and all the actions scenes were stupid silly and over the top... which is in DIRECT conflict with the tone of the material. Watchmen was grity and realstic... only Doctor Manhattan has true super powers and only Veidt has abilities that are above and beyond what a normal human should be able to achive. When they have Laurie kicking people across the alley and all of the characters doing silly stupid over the top wirework enhanced action, it KILLS the mood. I'd prefer the fight scenes be something more belivable... like how they are done in the Borne Identity or The Hunted with Tommy Lee Jones.
Oddly enough, I liked the music.
Different strokes.

...I have never read the story....not a fan of "graphic novels".....I like my literature without pictures....but the movie blew me away, saw it twice within 3 days, and I NEVER do that.....I have found that, for me, if i read a really good book and then go and see the movie, I am almost always disappointed in the movie....one exception being the Lord of the Rings movies.....no, they were'nt the books, but Peter Jackson did such a great job of casting and directing the movies that you hardly noticed the altered story. I am becoming more and more a fan of the new wave of noir movies. I know they're mostly green screen but the edginess is addicting...Sky Captain, 300, Watchmen, Sin City.....great entertainment, and after all, isn't that what a movie is supposed to do, entertain?

I think your right about that... I thought right after I saw Watchmen 'If I had never read the comic, I bet I would have enjoyed the movie a whole lot more.' I also agree about Lord of the Rings... Jackson made a lot of changes there... but those worked for me. Some of the changes actually imporved the story somewhat in my view.
However, even if you don't typicaly read graphic novels... I would strongly recomend Watchmen. It has receaved a lot of critical praise OUTSIDE of the comic world... even making more then one 'best of' list where the list is not of comics, but of novels... regular non-illistrated novels.
Watchmen was nothing short of groundbreaking and awesome when it came out in the late 80's... and it still is.

Well... one of the characters, Doctor Manhatten, has grown beyond the concern for the social implications of clothing to some degree... so sometimes he is walking around nude.
As for the ending... I won't speculate on if it's good or if it sucks, as you have not yet seen the film... it's just different then in the original story. If you have not read the Watchmen, the ending being different won't matter to you... so see the movie and decide how ya feel about it.

Believe it or not , I agree you a bit, I just don't think it ruined the movie. I thought Veidt was a too much of a pushover in the movie. By the end of the novel, it kind of had you thinking that maybe he was right, but he is still wrong. And now that I think about it, they did miss a lot. Could be that my brain filled a lot in for me. I also think that Rorschach and the Comedian were so well done that it made up for that though. As you said, different strokes :beerchug:

I could see how you might sorta unknowingly 'fill in the gaps' with your memories of the story.
I agree 100% about Comedian and Rorschach... SPOT on performances. I thought they nailed it. Silk Specter II was also very well done, as was NiteOwl II, more the most part.
I think they mainly missed with Veidt... he was really the only one I thought was glaringly out of place.
Don't get me wrong... there were parts in that movie that had me smiling ear to ear because certain moments were just so perfect.
Thats why I didn't say that I DIDN'T like it... just that I was very conflicted and undecided about it. There were moments in the movie that were too awesome to belive... and other moments that had me very frustrated... so it's hard to say I feel one way or another about it as a whole.
I'm hopping that when they release the DVD, there will be a lotta extra stuff in... like the LotR each movie had an extra 20-30 minutes on the DVD... maybe then I will feel better... maybe not, who knows.
