I've been looking into buying kawashima sword here from SoM to add it to my colection, but I have no idea which one to chose (I'd like the Snowfall katana but is not in stock :-<).
I'd want it mostly for aesthetical purposes... so which one would you guys suggest? I am -bad- at deciding on myself!

If you're interested in a sword for purely aesthetic purposes, I would probably go with the Hayari because it has a very vivid color scheme. The warrior is quite beautiful, but it's a more subdued beauty with the natural wood color. Take a look at the video on the front page of SoM featuring those swords. Both the Hayari and the Warrior seem to have an o-kissaki, which are nice, but the Hayari at least from the images seems to have a more visible hamon than the warrior. In general, the Hayari seems to be a more overt sort of beauty while the warrior is more subtle.
Honestly, all the new Kawashima swords sound like they have the same blade to me (I could be wrong about this) but with different koshirae and all are quite unique and beautiful. It really depends on what color scheme you like and how much you want the sword to stick out. I think the Hayari, Youkou, Warrior, and Snowfall colors should be about correct based on looking at the video and then the images, but the Mizuiro's color is a bit saturated. The blue is actually lighter, but it seems like quite a nice sword too. There's a review of it in the Sword Reviews section. If you really like the Snowfall, I would really recommend getting it on backorder and just waiting a little bit for it to come in. In my personal opinion, it's the most unique of the collection, being all white. Just a word of caution though, most lighter or brighter colored ito tend to get dirty and show it, whereas darker colors do not. If you're not really going to be cutting with it though, that should be less of a problem.
Hope that was helpful!

This is hearsay, but unless Kawashima has changed their generation 2 swords, all the parts are metal. This is confirmed by an owner of the Gen 1 Kawashima Snowfall.

I am a 1st generation owner of the Kawashima warior and I just checked and my menuki are alloy. So I agree, they are all most likely alloy.

the blade master

tess hi
if you want a katana that has a blade that looks like it was made from damascus steel because of the way the steel has been folded try the
kawashima 1 zen 2 the black dragon or 3 the d01g cant remember the
model no of the first two just the names

I am a 1st generation owner of the Kawashima warior and I just checked and my menuki are alloy. So I agree, they are all most likely alloy.
Well I always considered an alloy as metal because the primary components are metallic; even steel is an alloy, so I'm a bit confused as to how we can not consider alloys metal but steel a metal..? I guess my question would be what exactly do you mean when you say alloy? I would definitely agree that the color of the menuki do not make them look very metallic (rather plastic-y gold) but I do think that they can be considered "metal"... I also trust that you know what you're talking about when you differentiate something as alloy, but I just don't know the exact composition of that alloy for the menuki...
And I agree, a poll might be just what you need :)
Edit: Oh! And yes, the new 1095 is the second generation sword. Like Jason said, they are now spring tempered and differentially hardened but I think aesthetically they look the same (at least from the images that I've seen on the SOM page) I think they now should also have a real hamon as opposed to a wirebrushed one before.

An alloy it a metal that is derived from another metal, such as brass, which is made from iron or zinc. Usually the fitting are made from mixed alloy. This makes them cheaper to make. Some alloys contain other materials that are not metal. I assume that the fittings are composed of zinc alloy, alluminum alloy, brass alloy, nickle alloy or tin alloy. I may be wrong about what they use, but that's basically what an alloy is.

An alloy it a metal that is derived from another metal, such as brass, which is made from iron or zinc.
I think we're making the same argument here; it may lower the cost, but it is ultimately still metal. My question was how we could say the following with any sort of logical certainty:
1) Kawashima does not have all metal fittings because some are alloy
2) Alloys are not metals
3) Steel is an alloy
4) Steel is a metal
I certainly don't disagree that the metal is cheaper quality to save on costs, but I'm arguing that it's unfair to say that it's not metal. That means the corollary is that we have to concede that steel is not a metal either, meaning that an "all metal sword" is simply a misnomer.
bobO
March 7th, 2009, 09:32 PM
No, you can have a all metal sword with out a bit of steel in it.
Torawashi
March 7th, 2009, 10:18 PM
WTF??.....you can't have an all metal sword unless you get rid of the tsuka!.....what about the cloth or leather ito....the wood core.....and the mekugi.....now, you CAN have an all metal blade.....i mean, as long as we're splitting hairs here....right? and Robby, brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, bronze is an alloy of copper and tin.....you want a nice katana for display and cutting.....get the Musashi Tempest katana......the koshirae is absolutely stone gorgeous, never seen a tsuba or kashira like them on any sword....and the blade is beautiful....1045 carbon steel so it is good for light cutting.....my example, that I bought from Swords of Might, cut very well in the test cutting i did in the back 40 when I first got it, now it sits in a display stand on my mantle over the fireplace and shows off its charms.......a beautiful, practical sword.....http://www.swordsofmight.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=570 and besides, I think Kawashima is Japanese for "help, there's a hog in my kitchen". =))

March 7th, 2009, 10:26 PM
What Robby is saying is that fittings on lower end swords tend to be a cheap alloy (usually of zinc) that are not suitable for a functional sword. There are other alloys that work just fine, like silver and steel alloys.
YoukouYuri
March 8th, 2009, 06:26 AM
I don't think anyone disagrees with that RedZorak.
I think in fact we all agree that alloys are metal and that not all of them are suitable (steel is, zinc is not) but I don't think that we're even arguing the same problem here.
Since this argument is getting way off track, I say we let fallen leaves lie.
