Probably a dumb question but has anybody seen this movie and does it have English sub-titles?
It's had great reviews but unfortunately I don't speak Japanese.:-<

Amazon has it in a Region 1 DVD (US and Canada only) that says it has subtitles but not what language.
To be sure this is only $5 more

This is a great movie, it follows the life of a very poor Samurai, the subtitles should be english (I know they are on mine) the follow-up to this movie is The Hidden Blade, another great movie about a low ranking Samurai

Instead of blood and gore, it focuses on the relationship of the poor samurai and his children.
We never think of Samurai as 'struggling' with money or family, so this was an eye-opener.
I hear it won international awards even though most Americans (even the chanbara people) don't even know it exists.

Was this the one where the husband sells his swords to get medicine for his son? Also wasn't it the wife who took care of the household finances, these things being unworthy of a samurai's notice?

The husband sells his sword, but not for his son (he doesn't have a son in this) it's for his wifes funeral. I'm not familiar with the movie your describing

I'll have to find out the title of the one I'm talking about.the son has a wife and baby boy, they get sick he sells his swords, then he goes to a clan on the pretext of committing seppuke, but secretly hoping they take pity on him and give him a job.Instead they make him kill himself with his now bamboo sword.Daddy gets mad, takes revenge.

Yup that sounds like it.I like the movies where you see the human side of these highly trained killing machines. It must have been hell for the samurai to go from top dog, to wondering if you were going to eat that night.I wonder if It was released in japan under that title?

I didn't really understand why the nickname "twilight" was an insult.

I think the insult was that he was not able to go out at night with his peers and ran home at the first twilight to his familiy. The fact that he was unkept added to the comtempt that most his peers had for him. If you like this movie watch The Hidden Blade.

Im a bit late on the topic but this was one fantastic film. It focuses on how a samurai would deal with shame and how he struggles to maintain his honor. I really enjoyed this film a lot. I would like to see it again in order to get a better understanding of how a samurai like the one depicted in the film lived the way he did. Also the Hidden Blade which Yaso mentioned is another must see for sword, samurai, Japanese enthusiast should see. Another great meaning in that one.
