I would like to reccommend the graphic novel series "Samurai Executioner" by Kazuo Koike & Goseki Kojima. It is a ten volume set of short stories about Yamada Asaemon, the Shogunate's Shitoka [professional sword tester], it is historical fiction. This is was what tameshigiri originally was, testing on prisoners, it is quite graphic at times, and not for children [way too intense]
Koike and Kojima are famous for their 28 volume set "Lone Wolf and Cub" which was the basis for the "Shogun Assassin" movies.
They also did the "Path of the Assassin" series, which is historical fiction of the "real" Hatori Hanzo, not 'Kill Bill'.
The Samurai Executioner series is availible thru Amazon, and I can't reccommend it highly enough.
