I just have to revive this thread from the old forum.
Please share any tattoo pictures or stories you may have.
These are some pics of my most recent one, we actually just finished the final touch-up last week, it took 7 sittings and over 25 hours.

I for one never get tired of good art, glad it was started up again. Ninja your tattoo is classic Japanese Irezumi, you should be proud, and those koi should bring you luck. Who knows you might get a role in the latest American Yakuza movie. You know as the bodyguard walking around showing off his tattoo, who gets slaughtered in the opening scenes. [joking]>:)

We finished the first five hours of a loooong line of many on my next piece earlier today, i'll post a pick as soon as i can.
its kind of a compilation piece of a samurai print i fell in love with and a fantasy dragon by chris achilleos.
we really didnt do to much tweeking to the art besides fitting them together and adding some tibetan fire to the base and some more traditional flames around the dragons arms.
I cant find a good pic online yet of the dragon we used ( the copy i have is waaay to big to fit in a scanner) but heres a pic of the samurai. Some of you have likely seen it before.

heres some shots. keep in mind this is just a very basic outline, all the little details and colors will be added over a looong period of time.
i had originaly hoped that my artist would just use the pictures as more of a refrence and draw up something unique, somehow (and i'm still not sure how) we went this route. i'm feeling a little guilty about it not being all original, but i guess its definatly customized. besides its too late now LOL>:) And my artists specialty is shading and amazing color work (you can see that in the koi piece ive posted) so i really trust hes going to make this his own.
also i like the fact that its kind of "new school/traditional" if that makes any sense.

Seriously though, thanks guys for the compliments.
Thus far ive had to choose between purchasing tattoo appointments or new swords.
I look at my arms and see the Great Wave or Dragonfly I could have had, but the possitive response from you guys and other good friends tells me its been worth it, and I know with patients all those fine as hell razorbade sharp beauties will partner up next to my solo masahiro masakage (i still love that sword) and we all will live to be one happy tat2'd family.

Truthfully, people have had hair tattooed on their head.
And Ninja, what makes you think that was a wig??
I love your new work, and please keep us updated as your sessions continue!!
Earlier in the year I ran across a guy in the drug store, he had a shaved head [looked like Uncle Fester of the Addam's family] and on his "entire " head he had a goat's head tattooed on it in full color with an upside down pentagram on the goat's forehead.:-O [probably one of Richard's acquantices]. I quess it just goes to show the current state of affairs our world is living in [End days???]
SIGH!!!!.......................................... .............
I remember when mainly bikers and servicemen were the only ones getting tattooed!!

from what i understand blacklight tattoos fade much more rapidly than traditional ink.
also as far as them causing cancer, just put them on the list with everything else hazardous... microwaves, cell phones, cigarettes, alcohol, the sun, asprin, tap water, toys with lead paint, my ex girlfriend, air polution.

After seeing some of the ridiculous tattoos people put on themselves I wish some of them were done in UV ink.
I don't think you will find too many tatooists willing to put one on you though, unless they are the kitchen variety kind. Most tattooists could care less if you get cancer from the ink, what they care about, is if you sue them from getting cancer from the ink!!
Out of curiousity, what would you want put on you in UV ink?
I remember when this first came out years ago, I had thought it faded away with the fingernail tattoo's.

i havent really been keeping track, its About 8 with the lining and dropshadows, 5 on the fire and a little over 5 for the samurai, so i guess around 18 hours and i think we just hit the halfway point.
that damn samurai has 12 colors in it, and he used 4 different mag needles, seemed every 5 minutes he was swapping machines and switching colors. and were not even done with it yet.
Those koi on my other arm were about 27 hours, but i know this one is going to surpass that.

Well I decided on my next tattoo, I plan to get all of my favorite Chambara characters (or as many as I can fit) on my calf (right or left I haven't decided yet), there are 3 for sure that I would want, Sanjuro, Zatoichi, and Sonny Chiba as Iba Shoemon from Shogun Shadow (which isn't really chambara, but Sonny Chiba is in many Chambara films, and if you have seen Shoguns Shadow his Hakama is incredible). I don't have any idea what the cost will be, Iba Shoemon alone will probably be expensive because of how intricate his clothing is, but I will save a little here and there, and I should have enough by next year. I will post pics as soon as I get my first session done

Sweet tats guys. I however dont have any cas Im only 16 and my mom womt le me get one. It just so happens that I have two big Japanese Maples in our yard that my grandfather planted. Right now they are the most beautiful shade of deep red Ive seen. I had to do a biology project on a collection of leaves and decided to use one of our JM's as part of it. The full name is Japanese Red Maple. It has a huge scientific name, check it out: Acer Palmatrum, Atropurpureum. Thats a mouthful!

Bob-O,
You are talking about shelflife, who posted back in Samurai movies.
I quess nobody here bought any of his T-shirts, so shelflife had a shelflife of all of one day. =(
That was just a head collage anyway, I'm sure Brian has something more dynamic in mind.
I really like the idea of a wraparound! :ohyeah:
Brian, that Yakuza look is usually refered to as sleeved, because it looks as though you are wearing a sleeve. Instead of a sleeve coverup, you can always put some big Kanji characters [in black] over the top of the current design and sleeve in a background. Which would basically be a coverup of a coverup, without actually covering up. It takes a lot of ink for a true coverup and a good design to hide the previous tattoo.
Just an idea, you get me talking about tattoos and I can go on all day.

Thanks. I have a few but none with decent pics to post for you guys yet. I have a asian dragon in progress from elbow to mid finger on my left arm that is still only an outline. It started out as a cover up for my ex wifes name and just kinda grew. When I have a chance to take a good shot of it I'll share. The two on my face have a special meaning for me and I had the option to do traditional tap but passed it up for machined ink. Kept getting the image of getting poked in the eye every time I considered it. These two were done by Orlie @ Humble Beginings in my home town of San Jose California. The artist studied in Hawaii and the Fili Islands. He's done alot of work for my family Ex wife, Bro etc... I am pretty happy with em but I'm most likely gonna expand down the neck to my chest.

The right side is a Filipino form of writting that dates back before Spain invaided. It's modern term is Alibata but was known as Baybayan script. It came over from Malay and it's origins are believed to be related to Sandskrit. (SP?) The shape was tweeked a little to fit the desired area. I got em both at the same time. NINE? Yeah, you look like a guy who don't fool around. A friend just gave me the Huck Spaulding catolog, so many tat's so little money. I have found a few in there that I really like. We have a really good tat guy up here named Mark Fairchild, who does some of the finest fine line work I've ever seen. Hope to get him. Tell my friends if you get a fat girl friend with tat's, you got shade in the summer, heat in the winter, and moving pictures all year long!

Years back I remember meeting a circus family, tattooist and firebreathers, etc, that had tattooed their children. Many things that were forbidden in the past [facial tattoos] are now being accepted.
When I was young they used to do the old needle and thread tattoos, I still remember when my brother-in laws came home as teenagers with HATE and LOVE tattooed on their fingers. From that old Robert Mitchem movie "Night of the Hunter", [my poor mother-in-law]. It is funny, but I think those tattoos started them down a certain path in life. [not good]
I remember at my first job, when I was young, I met this man who just been released from prison [spent a few decades]. He had HATE and LOVE plus the usual prison tattoos all over his hands, he always wore long sleeved shirts.
I asked him why he always wore long sleeved shirts even in the summertime?
He told me how you do things you regret in life, and took off his shirt.
He had needle and thread tattoos all over his body, every inch. But he didn't have artwork, just sayings and graphitti, his entire body looked like the scribblings on a bathroom wall.
I remember when they did the remake of "Night of the Hunter" and they tried to make Robert Dinero scary with those prison tattoos, they should have seen this guy! Sometimes even movies can't duplicate reality.
I too am heavily tattooed, but like menukisan and 69Ninja, I did it intelligently, and artfully. Just like menukisan all my tattoos have meaning. I have never regretted ever getting them as they represent who I am.
All I am saying is, anyone considering a tattoo please think them out, they often reveal who you are, in some instances, "Do you want to be a cartoon character?'"
Ninja, tattoo stories, I got a lot of them, unfortunately with some of the young people on this Forum, I can't really tell the good ones.

So very true Dotanuki, what you said earlier.
Some people just dont think/care, I know a girl (friend of a friend) and no lie has LOSER tattoo'd on her forhead! Now I know sometimes people have serious issues and in the heat of the moment can do crazy things as we always see in the news, But part of that has to be passed on to the "artist", and i use the word lightly, that agreed to do it, I understand that hes just some guy in a kitchen trying to make a quick buck, but come on! try talking her into puting it somewhere else, wrist or neck even. and dont get me started on the advertisment tattoos.
BobO yeah thats a great Idea, anything gone about that way I think is a great Idea, even if your a disney fan and get a 2 foot steamboat willie on your back, I think things like that are beautiful ways of self expression without crossing the line into plain crazy.
MANY people think ANY even the smallest tattoo is crazy or sacreligious, but as we all know, "you cant please all the people all of the time". and of course I'm not touching the religious aspect, some things dont read to well on puplic forums.
All I know is I love mine and I can promise anyone that I will get more. Sure maybe some doors are closed to me now, maybe in the corprate or media world, but dammit Im blue collar and Im fine with that I love working in clubs or loading trucks with a forklift, heck forklifts are fun! (be safe).
At first my mom gave me the clasic question: "how are you going to feel when your 90 and all tattooed up?" I got a chuckle out of thinking about it and told her to take a good look at my generation and age class, theres a heck of alot of tattoo's on us and when were all sitting in the nursing homes at 90 eating our happy pills and playing bingo it will be alot of fun trying to remember what all our blurry tattooes used to be and telling our exaggerated stories.:ranting:

you know that sounds a little pricey but it really depends on on how detailed the artist is, most shops charge 75-100 bucks per hour for walk in work, so if he said it would take 2 hours or more thats a ballpark price. in my opinion tattoos are one of the things that you shouldnt have done by the lowest bidder. just be sure to really check his work before hand.
>I copied the rest from a website cause it says what I wanted to and its quicker than typing it all<
"The bitterness of a poor-quality tattoo will linger long after the sweetness of a cheap price is forgotten." - Unknown
Ever heard the saying, "You get what you pay for"? Yeah, well, the body art industry is one place you won't find a better example of the prudence of that advice. Quality in the body art world can range anywhere from absolute crap to jaw-dropping fantastic - and everywhere in between. And although it may not always be this way, in most cases you're going to get exactly what you pay for.
"Good tattoos ain't cheap, and cheap tattoos ain't good!" - Unknown
I'd be rich if I had a dime for every time I heard someone say, "I really want a tattoo from so-and-so, but they're so expensive!" If you really want a tattoo from a particular artist, why are you going to let a price tag hold you back? You do realize you'll be wearing this tattoo for the rest of your life, right? If you don't think that's worth a few extra dollars, don't get it! "But I can get the same tattoo from my buddy for half that price!" Fine - you go see your buddy and don't come looking for a shoulder to cry on when you end up with a lousy tattoo or get some kind of disease or infection from improper sterilization.
This does not mean that every quality artist charges an arm and a leg. There are some that genuinely do good work but also don't charge a lot. There are also some charging more than their work is worth. This is where research comes in. Don't choose any artist based on price alone. Look at the portfolio. Ask around to see if they have a good reputation for good work. Check out the competition and compare quality, not prices!

I seen this film back in the 70's, it was the inspiration for my tattoos.
I never thought I would be able to find this again, thank you, Youtube!
This movie was about Shi Jin, the 9 dragoned, one of the 108 mountain bandits of chinese legend. You can read about him in the book, "The Water Margin" also known as "All Men are Brothers" by Pearl S. Buck, a classic.
He had just completed his training in this scene, his instructor said he had just one more thing to complete. He then tattooed him and gave him a sword as a completion/graduation gift.
Hey, it don't get any better than that!! :ohyeah:
My avatar is the japanese version of Shi Jin, Kyumonryushishin.

Awesome thread, some amazing work here.
Alas, tats and I don't get on. I got two very small, single line figures, one on each shoulder, at different times in my life. A treble clef since I play, and Neptune's trident (when I was in the Navy).
Each time, the ink turned my stomach, and I was feeling sick for hours. Barely kept my cookies down (I must be allergic or something). I could never sit for an hour, it'd kill me I think... =(
But I can still appreciate the art, even if I can't wear any myself.

Yeah goose, they are taking the fun out of everything anymore, but then there is a different class of people getting tattooed today also.
The problem with drinking while you are getting tattooed, is every time they hit you with that needle, it kills any buzz. But when it is over, it is like someone hit you with a baseball bat. (delayed drunk)

Can't you just tell us what you got planned for your leg and ribs???
NINJA,

I have a very close friend, that I taught how to tattoo.
He told me he needed practice, so he was going to work on himself, tattooing his legs and stomach.
I laughed, thinking to myself, I really want to see 'that'!!!!
The next time I went to see him, he had his thighs heavily tattooed down to his knees, and also his stomach was tattooed, all done by himself, and done looking upside down and in a mirror, I might add!!!!
I myself wouldn't of believed it, if I didn't see it with my own eyes. It was a good job also, nothing spectacular, but a good job nonetheless.
Never underestimate the human spirit!!! And the need for a tattoo!!!!
Please don't ask for pictures, guys. My scanner is broke and like Bob-O and a few others, I am too broke to fix it either.
NINJA knows me well enough, to know this is a true story.

lol, I thought you were gonna say when he got done tattooing himself everything was upsidedown and any words were mirror backwards..
I was at a tattoo party bout a year ago and got to watch the guy tattoo himself later in the night when everyone had left. I know people do it all the time but I watched for a while cause it was interesting to me. sad thing, and I diddnt tell him of course, was he really wasnt doing the best job, might have just been the weird angle he had to force himself into. just looked uncomfortable.
as for the pieces I'm getting this summer nothing is final yet (not drawn up) but the Ideas are there and my appointment is scheduled for the 13th for my calf. lemme get some pictures together and i'll show you what i'm going for. I just woke up, still in bed actually (laptop) so give me a few hours to wake up.. long night of course lol.

The first one were starting next month on my calf is going to be a take off of a tattoo Ive wanted for a while, One of my favorite bands are the Deftones, and ive always loved the album cover of their self titled cd, its a skull in a bed of roses:
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg21/SMAYORA/DEFTONES.jpg
Thats the base I wanted to go from for this next piece. the main thing I'm taking from that pic is the roses in the background the skull were changing, I want to go with something darker somewhat sinister my artist has done a skull pieceHeres a link (http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=184066743&albumID=565221&imageID=22025669) that I like the basic look of and asked him do something similar. also were going with the skull and crossbones 'Jolly Roger' but instead of bones crossed I want knives crossed.
I looked at hundreds of knifes to show him what i'd like and kind of came to the conclusion that the skull will be over a pair of Boker Rampage, blade down. Or something of a similar design, its up to him of course, hes the artist not me.
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q10/dragonsbrew717/Bokerrampage.jpg
I just like the Skull/roses theme. kind of a duality, Yin Yang thing. Of death and beauty.
I just cant wait to see what he comes up with when he puts it all together.
It should be a fairly large piece as well, hey, Size does matter.
The next piece for my side I'm REALLY excited about Its going to be a real fun one that I know a few of you are going to love! Its also a tattoo that is just for me and something that really defines my personality and generation. I cant wait!!!! One of the reasons I'm getting it on my ribs Is simply because its a tattoo more for ME than anything and not many people will ever even see it. It'll be a big one too though, bout 10" or so. and I'm just gonna keep the details a surprise for now Hee Hee.
I'm actually getting a small piece done on July 14th as well, One of my best friends is coming home on leave for a month from Korea on the 13th and Ive already made an appointment for both of us to get some quick smaller old school art done the day after he gets home. we'll each pick the pieces when we get there. Its awsome I'm gonna be at the shop 2 days in a row!
Sorry if this post was long winded. Blame Dotanuki! he's the one that asked lol.

Just gonna chime in a little bit here...
Personally, I'm not into tats, but then again I don't think I've seen one tha's "me" yet...
However, in some instances like Ninja, I think it looks great on him. It's amazing the time and dedication that can go into some of them. I laugh about the barcode ones...but only cause a girl at work got one, scanned herself, and rang up as a $1.35 can of soup.
Back on topic...what do y'all think about the Kanji people tend to get put on them? Is it normally what is says or is it more of the tattoo artist sense of humor making it say something close but with a different meaning, since most people can't read kanji? (That I know of, at least....)

Ninja; grrrrrrreat work dood! looks like it's gonna come out sweet! get lotsa color in there!
Dragon; you mentioned you haven't seen a tattoo that was you yet......since you're not familiar with tattoos you may not know that you can look for pictures in books or even draw one up yourself and take it to the tattoo artist and he can put that image on you, any size you want.....you're not limited to the flash on the tattoo parlor walls or books.....after I got my first one I was hooked and now I have 4.....and yes there is pain, but you can hack it and it's part of the experience.

It's been far too long since I have had any ink done. I've been spending all my extra cash on swords..lol. I'm hurting for some ink. I'm going to do a full sleeve on my right arm. I haven't thought of anything to finish my half sleeve on my left arm yet, so it will remain empty for now.

Tora: I'm aware that it is possible to get a custom tattoo, my problem being that in terms of drawing that transference from thought to paper usually goes poorly....I'm not worried about biding time till I get one. It'd probably be something not many people get...but as per the pain, I'm not too worried. Had wisdom teeth pulled out when they didn't even make it through the gums yet and the anestesia was wearing off, broke stuff before, got hit by a car (I report anyone who blows past a schoolbus putting out its stop sign...) But I think my first would be a sorta tribal look...it's the jewelry I'm best at designing and the feel is a lil' more me...finding one I really like is the problem.

One thing I try to tell people when they spend days or weeks designing their own tattoo is 'LEAVE THE ART TO THE ARTIST' thats what they do best, unless you yourself have serious artistic ability of course.
True artists will be able to put your words and ideas down to paper much easier than you would think.
I have friends who spent months trying to piece and draw up a piece they liked only to bring it to an artist that pointed out all the flaws and drew something up overnight that was a hundred times better than anything they had imagined.
Just remember ART is what they do, its how they make their living. You just have to do a little searching for one you can trust and leave the hard part up to them.

I only have one so far, that I drew myself... I have several other designs I'd like to get eventualy, but I'm not 100% happy with them yet. The problem is, I used to be a MUCH better artist. When I was younger I wanted to be a comic book artist, I went around to conventions and showed my work, trying to break into the biz.
Sadly, I had my portfolio and art supplies throw out when I amde the mistake of renting space in a friends apparetment, and he didn't pay the rent. Landlord got ******, tossed everyting out of the appartment, including all my work and supplies.
I was crushed, and didn't draw at all for years after that... when I fianly got back to it, I didn't have anywhere near the talent or passion for it I once had.
Anyway... sob story over, here is the tat:

I used to work in a balloon factory (latex party balloons), in fact it is the only factory in the world that makes balloons (locations everywhere around the world - Qualatex)
I was a line operator and sometimes I'd have a pile up of boards (molds) in the oven, in-board of 140F, out-board of 280F, and I'd have to climb halfway into the oven to get some of the boards out. The first thing that would burn, is my tunnels and the rubber o-rings that hold them in my ears. Man, that was torture #-o !!!!

You know if you wait another year, you will be elgible for a senior's discount!
Don't forget about the freebies that come with any tattoo, the inner lip and 'mom' tattoo's.
A mom tattoo consists of an M on each buttock, when you bend over it spells MOM!!!
I told my mother that one once, she hit me, HARD!!!!
Sometimes mothers have no sense of humour! :blackeye:
The Kanji should be vertical for this tattoo, maybe through the middle, I really don't know how 'Death before Dishonor' would translate. Some phrases don't translate well.

I don't have any tattoos, I prefer my scars. But one day I might get one. A small mitsu tomoe on one side where the back of the neck and the trapezius meet.

Wow, Mako, that is an amazing site, I'm going to have to learn how to use the Internet more in the future.
At one time I was quite good with Kanji, as well as katakana. Hiragana was hard for me. But over time and lack of use have made many things fuzzy.
I thought I remembered being told back in the 80's that phrase didn't translate well. Back then there was no Internet and even many Oriental people who were living here long forgot some of the lanquage.
I could tell many stories of errors of Kanji, because things were different back then and many things were tried to be taken literal or by what they thought the spoken word was.
For example, ken in Japanese in kanji has at least 2 interpertations, sword or fist. A kanji for the word kenpo could be written (by the unknowing) as sword method or fist method, both would be correct, but not necessarily what was meant.
I also believe some the the funny signatures on some swords were because of this, as well of taking into account the schooling and spelling? of the swordsmith.
Can you imagine if goose was a japanese swordsmith what some of his signatures might read? =))
Just joking, goose, but I'm sure everyone gets the point I'm trying to make.
Will.
You would be surprised how many people have kanji tattooed on them, that have no clue what it means, or only take the word of the tattooist!

It's a 3 piece combined into one. As a fan of vampire lore, legend, and philosophy I decided on this. Also, I really identify with vampires bc of feeling alone, existing merely for the sake of existing, alone and lonely for eternity, feeling cold and dead inside, and locked into eternal darkness.

Thanks Dot! Yes, things are turning around for me. Found love again, a reason for everyday, going back to school soon for welding to get better job and make more money, getting married soon, back into my drumming again and found a local band that lets me sit in and play at some of their shows, etc...
As far as it being a custom design, thats a yes n no lol I found the basic design of the tribal samurai online, but added the kanji for the bushido code. It's on the back of my left calf, and hurt like a mother trucker! 95% of all the fill was too thin n small for my artist to use a thicker batch of needle, so it was done with a single outlineing needle.
All of my ink represents some part of my life or something I've went through. My next is going to be a nice colorful phoenix to represent the times in my life where I've literally had to let a part of myself die, in order to rise again bigger, stronger, wiser, and a better person. Just like the way the phoenix rises from its own ashes.
