I'm surprised Brian hasn't reviewed this yet. This is my favorite all-time samurai flick, back in the 80's the entire dojo had this movie memorized much like "Rocky Horror Picture Show". This movie was actually a compilation of the first two "Lone Wolf and Cub" movies, with the plot slightly altered and a different music soundtrack. The music sets the mood, better than the original Lone Wolf series. I remember seeing this movie at the local Kung-Fu theatre and here is the trailer;

They have also released all six of the "Lone Wolf and Cub" movies that you can buy in compilation sets. they are subtitled and also among my favorite films. Here is a sample;

The Lone Wolf series is based on a series of graphic novels that are quite famous in Japan, much like our Batman or X-men.
Also in case nobody noticed I believe the character Trip Fisk is based on Retsudo Yagyu, [the long white haired master with the eyepatch]

I like to wear my Kimono and have asword nearby when I watch these chanbara flicks....
....but with all the money I put into swords, I simply cannot afford to buy the DVD at their store prices.

And DVD-Empire doesn't carry them used. Why? Maybe those of us who buy them never sell them.

So anyone have a good place for discount Chanbara DVD?
And not the "i dubbed them onto dvd-rw' places either. actuial DVD that are affordable when you consider the number out there.

Am i the only guy here who likes Sho Kusogi ninja movies, Ninja Vixens films and the like as well as Kurosawa's films?

I buy alot of my DVD's from Overstock.com, they have a great selection of Samurai movies at very good prices, but if you don't mind CD-RW I would suggest these two

I have bought from both theses places in the past, and they have A+ customer service, great prices, and free shipping

Hi, picked up a new digitized, re-mastered Shogun Assassin, and noticed that there is now an English dubbed Vol 3 and 4. I watched Vol.3, and its the one with the cute young thing, with the kinky tat's; same music as LW&C, just English added. I imagine that Vol 4 is the same way, but not sure yet.

The new version of number one is a good fresh copy that moves fast and sounds clean.

MBob, Is Shogun Assasin any good? It is sitting there at the public library and I have not checked it out yet. Waiting to have the house to myself and try your recipe while watching ??????? Shogun Assasin.

It is very GOOD!! One of my all time favorites.
Although with a moniker of Dotanuki you should have expected that.
Shogun Assassin is actually parts of the first two movies put together with a changed plot. Retsudo Yagyu is now the Shogun.
They changed the movies background music also, but all this actually made the movie more enjoyable.
To keep the original plots would have made it too hard for American audiences to understand.
Get it, you won't regret it! :ohyeah:

It moves a lot faster than LW&C 1 and 2 which it is put together from; the English in nice too! You can watch the movie instead of playing with the remote to read the big captions that go by too fast.

It is now my favorite overall sword flick, as it is easier to watch than most.

I like the whole lone wolf "Baby cart series" except for the ending. But either way this is one of the best.

I'll admit to having a sword near by, when watching. And I didn't know about ninja vixens, but I do now!:-O

I got Shogun assassin first and then I had to see the rest of them. Although Shogun assassin is just the first two put together and edited, it is easily the best. I enjoyed the whole series though and would recommend this to anyone.

I too believe this film is probably partially responsible for fueling my sword addiction from a young , impressionable age. Please check out Lady Snowblood (Shirayuki Hime) one and two. They are based on the manga from the same author who did the Sword of Vengeance (Lone Wolf & Cub) series and made into films..which influenced Quentin Tarantino enough to rip off aspects of the plot for "Kill Bill". I've watched both these series dozens of times (along with Zatoichi series) and they never get boring!... KK

I've read the Lady Snowblood books, but never seen the movies.
I take it they are pretty good then?
Have you ever read any of Kazuo Koike's manga?
(Koike is the author of Lady Snowblood and Lone Wolf and many others)

I have a rather short but good interview with Koike san on the BBC TV series Japanorama..worth searching out if you can find it. The Lady Snowblood movies are quite good..with the lead actress also singing the theme song (which QT also used on the Kill Bill soundtrack). If you love Ogami Itto ,you'll like her as well! Even the camera angles and visual style appear often in KB.1..a homage to many Japanese directors and film icons. KK

=)) No Mako..Im not "Mr Floppy Hair".. and I didnt repeat my marriage vows at Sanrio land with Hello Kitty either. I have to admit that he's done some great interviews..Hayo Miyazaki, Beat Takeshi ,Takeshi Kitano, Kazuo Koike, etc...so many of my favorite japanese directors. A good series... KK
