Finally I found the time to rewrap my WKC Heart of the Dragon katana.

Until this wrap I never used Hishigami. I found a alternate way of making Hishigami on this site:

http://www.zatoichi.de/katana_01/index.htm

This method worked out very well for me. And by using those cardboardstrips I could make the ito very tight.

Her some pics: 12 inch Tsuka, Fuchi/Kashira Dotanuki, Large Dragon silver Menuki, silk-ito

That cardboard strip idea is brilliant.

Nice work!

Thanks you guys. I first tried with the traditional papertriangles but still my patience dont seem to fit to this method. The cardboardstrip method is very easy. Print out the strips on the site. Adjust the size on the PC until it have the meassures 7-8 mm. I glue it all to the cardboard. Cut out the sides without cutting the triangles. Bend the one side over the triangles and glue it. I put the sides inside a book with preassure on top. If the Tsuka is longer you can also make the strips longer by adding more pattern. When the glue is dry cut out the triangles. Instead of cutting the corneredges with a knife I filled them with a thin round file. Afterwards I sprayed them black to hide them better under the black ito.

I've often wondered if these were any good and judging by the outcome in the pics, it would appear that they are and save a lot of pain in the thumbs, not to mention the arse.
Thanks for posting. =D>

lookin good, i've been wanting to try that method just never got around to it .i cut my triangles out of notebook backing, works pretty good, i don't have the patience for all that folding plus the cardboard seems sturdier anyway. again good job.

Christ, your Ito binding is better than mine, come to think of it it's almost as good as tsuka wraps done in Japan!

Edit: Looks like the German templates work extremely well, I might give them a try when I redo my PPK Tsuka.

I'm afraid to say that you'll get a few slightly off binds over the years you do this.

I've got a little saying for bad binds: If Tsuka-Maki looks better than that of the Paul Chen Practical range then your doing somthing right :)

Hi Wolfhound

I live in Denmark so there is some english frazes I don't understand. Please explain "off binds".
Is it bindings that ain't good? I made quite a few of those. But all the time I try to improve. I've sometimes rewrapped a tsuka 2 or 3 times untill I was satisfied. But then again, my demands of my own skills are getting higher.

Sorry buddy I was philosophizing again, I'll try and explain.

If your Tsuka wrap is not very good but looks better than a Hanwei Practical Series Katana then it's not bad at all, it's rather good :)

BTW are you a member of the European Kendo Federation by any chance?

Cool, I say this because the wrapping on the last two Paul Chen Practical I bought weren't up to scratch, It seems like they're using a thicker suede Ito and just binding it on Willy-nilly (sloppily).

The reason I was asking about the EKF is because I'm a member of the BKA and we sometimes have EKF members over training with us.
