View Full Version : Politically Correct Bashing Weapons

FYI: I'm not becoming a post whore just trying to liven things up...

I am a firm believer in Teddy Roosevelt's saying "walk softly and carry a big stick" I also feel that the simple walking stick is one of the world least recognized self defense weapons....I have a number of sticks that I carry on a regular basis, Cold Steel's, African Walking Stick, Cold Steel's Faux Blackthorn Stick, and a authentic Blackthorn stick to name a few. The stick, club, crudgle, is one of the oldest weapons and the walking stick is one of the only self defense weapons that can be openly carried while drawing little or no attention to itself. I am including a few links you might find interesting...

Thanks BM, have been carrying a stick since I tore up my back when I was in my twenties at first because it made it easier when I had to walk or stand for long periods, then just because I liked them...
here's a really bad review I did on youtube for the cold steel blackthorn

BM here's a much better review of the African, not done by me of course, for the money I really don't think you can go wrong with it.

"Honey! wheres my beating stick I need to punish ... er I mean go out for a walk." =))=))=))

But on a serious note, a nice array of walking sticks you have there. The closest thing to a walking stick I have is an umbrella.

I'ld probably be the one on the receiving end of that beating stick:Praying:

Some nice sticks you've got there.
I have an old sword cane with a Toledo steel blade and one made of Ash very similar to this...
https://www.coldsteel-uk.com/store/Walkabout-XL.html
I can't carry the sword cane outside the home but as you and Jonis have said in your vids, the walking stick is pretty unobtrusive and can be very useful, not that I'd use one for anything other than a walking aid of course. :Whistling:

I have a 1st gen. Hanwei Zato Ichi that I glued a strip of black leather on so now it is ninjato and not a hidden cane sword. The leather wraps around the tsuka at the top ,meeting the saya. My hand when I walk covers this but were I confronted by the local police I move my hand to the saya and it's not a cain sword or a hidden weapon at all. It's just a Ninjato..which is leagal here....

.....Got a shellalagh about 18 inches long (ok Mick....don't yield to the temptation). It's made from a stout grape vine like the Roman Centurions used to carry..... Formidable! or as they say in France, "Let's get the hell out of France".... 8-}

I have a couple of sword canes but never carry them too much hassle, really can't say they are politically correct either.

hi illmade
our tora has been known to streach the truth just a little in his time so the tales of an 18 inch shelele should be (now this is going to sound wrong) taken with a pinch of salt so to speak meaning i wouldnt belive him if he said my arse was on fire and i smelt burning meat=))=))=))=))

Well all I can say is that if your arse is on fire:flaming: I hope it has nothing to do with Tora's 18 in shellalagh :-O

seriously though i use a simple rock-maple cane when my knee's acting up..or not, it's a lot heavier than it looks (and they made a most satisfying thud when they hit the ground..,g'kar)

I'm looking at getting one of those Cold Steel synthetic sticks after watching illmade2's and Jonis' reviews a few times but can't decide which one.
Ah, decisions, decisions. :-?

Time to ask for some help methinks.

Mako IMHO it's really 6 of one and half dozen of the other, if you're planning on giving it a rough work-out (ie breaking bricks, busting plywood etc.) I would go with the African, not because it's any stronger but I don't think it would show the abuse as much. If you're getting it to carry more or less everyday I would go with the blackthorn, it has a nicer look and would draw less atention to itself.
I don't know whetner I mentioned it or not but these do not come with rubber tips, some people find them a bit slick, I never did after a few walks with them the ends rough up nicely. you can of couse pick up a tip to put on them.

Cheers S' ;)
I was leaning towards the blackthorn as it will be carried every day and as you've said it's a little less unobtrusive than the African, approx. 95% of my walking is over fields and woodland interspersed with fairly rough ground so I'm not really concerned about the tip being slick and I'm guessing that it's nothing a little coarse sandpaper couldn't put right if need be?
These are some crap pics of my sword sticks, the top one was inherited but I've no idea how old it is and the blade is stamped 'Toledo'.
The lower one is all metal and weighs a ton and was probably made in China a few weeks before I bought it about 7 years ago for $30 or so. :)

Mako the Chinese one I have to agree, as for the other it's really hard to say with that style of blade and the type of cane it is I would say late 1800's to maybe around the end of WWII, those types are still being made but newer ones tend to be flashier and less utilitarian the one you have looks like it was actually made for use.

I gotta admit I like that one you inherited, the blade looks close to the fencing rapiers.

I really don't know how old it is, it belonged to my maternal grandfather who passed away in 1952 but where and when he got it is anybody's guess.

J; a very nice stick.....looks to be from the Victorian era, as the grip is shaped to look like a boot, a common practice in the 1880s-90s. Congratulations and rep to you for a non-modern authentic antique collectible!

I didn't know that the boot shaped handle was popular in Victorian times, in fact, I know nothing about them except that it's illegal to offer one for sale without provenence of it being at least 100 years old.
