Ok, this is kinda sad, but I have removed several tsukas off katanas before but for some reason the hand forged shirasaya I got from Jason will not come off. I have tried tapping where the fuchi would be but it is too small to get a good enough blow to force it out. anyways all suggestions are welcome (except for breaking the tsuka wanting to use it), this will soon be another custom of mine.

I made a U shape drift out of soft wood to absorb most of the blows and not damage the tsuka. I place the blade in a vice protected with leather or a good towel (cutting edge down) and then put the drift on the mune and hammer the drift to push the tsuka off. If it is glued on you may be toast and have to make a new tsuka.

Don't worry Andy, I felt the exact same way about building myself a new Wakizashi tsuka when I did my Kodachi.

Well I got the tsuka off. All I did was tap the top (ehere the fuchi would be) a few more times then slammed the kat into the saya without the pegs and the tsuka moved, it just goes to show what would work if you just try something.

Please be careful with that 'slamming' Andy, don't want to put your kissaki through your saya! Nice link Cal, I love the Usagiya site (Gooseman's favorite too!). KK
