gentlemen

Having just purchased this

http://paulchenhanweiswords.com/practical-iaito-28-inch-blade.aspx

i now need to get some advice from some knowledgeable forum members. I'm totally untrained but wish to learn to unsheath and sheath my sword whilst doing tamishigiri less ungainly.

1- where do i find an obi to hold sword on my waist? or what do most people use?

2-i assume doing the unsheathing very slowly at first is my best bet so as to train muscle memery , then moving on to slowly sheathing sword.

i have the proper term for sheathing and unsheathing but are on a seperate page will use proper terms next post !

3- the knocking off of blood from blade, i've seen several styles, which one is best for a rank amiture such as me, and which is the style YOU use?

I relize buying this laito(proper term??) will not make me a great swordsman, i just don't want to look so awkward when on the odd occasion i cut tameri matts is all. i feel totally unqualified to attempt any kata with a live blade. it just wouldn't be safe !

all help will be appreciated spring is a bit far off so no great hurry , i'll have a bit of time to put into practise any tips.

a great thank you in advance

da gooseman

ps- i will walk before i run , but, do they make a laito wak to match? and if so do i need one???
here we go into a new zone of interest !!!

No problem Goose, keep in mind what I would show you is not something I made up in my backyard but an honest to God sword art as taught by one of the great modern sword masters, The Real Deal, a killing art. Also a fellow forumite helped me with my draw so now the sword floats out of the saya, pretty cool. I'll be heading down south again soon, so seize the day. If my buddy Darrell is around we can go see some really way cool cars to.

Yup, that's Kendo, close enough. There are other things you can get ie, undershirt, tabi etc. Make sure the obi will go around you three times. Really Dotanuki is the one with the good info.

Ok guys my laito came today !! happy happy

it's about what i expected, maybe a bit better, i did not want to pay alot if i don't "get into this" and i can always get something later if i do !

putting the fear of being cut aside is way cool i can draw(indoors ) so i'm slow and careful, and "noto" pretty much with confidence i get whats going on here. need an obi which i'll get next week sometime and maybe a kendo gi. please excuse my ignorence in terminogly i've got it but have to leave this page to get it and may lose what i've written. (dotanuki) i printed the terms you sent but they're at work was gonna use them but forgot them . please do not consider my ignorance as distaine for culture, when i was being trained as a youth i learned all the Japanese terms and can still count to ten! can't spell them but can count. used my limited Japanese when i went to the Osaka worlds fair in 1970! Expo 70 it was called. have pictures of that time me all of 18yrs of age !!!

come on guys it's snowing you're inside talk at me !!

Expo 70,HAH! I have been going thru my friends stuff and one Folio (Ukiy-e) has this printed on it. So now I know where it came from and when, cool. Cool to see you getting into this Goose. There is a really good series of vids on you tube for tying up the hakama etc, I'll see if I can find it for you. I was talking to Dotanuki about one waza that made me nervous, turns out I was doing it wrong, lol. You never stop learning do you. Think I have a price on that one woodblock print for you, not to bad,Pm me if your still interested. Congrats on your purchase of sword etc. P.S. Mic, who you calling normal!

Bob-o

you're a pip !

I'm very self consiouse right now because i'm so awkward doing this, unfamilure territory . there is a Laito(term) school in west orange but i think from their web site may be too commercial for me . Besides the Laito is the least of what they offer. may have to go and see what's up.

Bob-o that Japanese guy on u-tube is great he really explains slowly for us dummies i would travel to train with him anytime !

LOL, would you expect anything different. No L in Iaido. Goose my offer stands. I'm not like Dot but I could give you the basics My gi and such are in GA, but it seems I might be here longer then I thought as the guy I was working for in GA went out of business. But what ever, yeah that guy is great I would love to train with him. Anywho you know the drill slow and sure to start get the muscle memory and speed just comes naturally. But remember you learn wrong you do wrong and thats harder to correct down the road. There are some good books out there maybe Dot will recommend some for us.
