Got both "The Book of Five Rings" (William Scott Wilson trans. version) and Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" (Lionel Giles trans. version) in today. I cannot wait to dive right into them. I already have and read cover to cover the big orange Hagakuri. Am thinking of getting "The Unfettered Mind" next.

Goose,
I kinda thought that's what this section was for..At least for the posting of such works that we should read. That is how I was turned on to "Hagakuri", "The Art of War", and "The Book of Five Rings". But, I am also taking it that you are meaning where we could post about them, and lend them out to others, kinda like a "library" of sorts? Not a bad idea :-? But, as you said (and I agree) there would almost certainly be someone whou would mess it up for everyone.

Yep, someone would mess it up.
Probably in short order too!
There is always one who ruins it for everyone!
Usually a new member just trollin the site.

Everyone does have varying tastes in books and movies.
Often what one person enjoys another might hate.
Although some just post opposing opinions just to create conflict.

Although the books, "Art of War" and "Book of 5 Rings" have some questionable translations out there, if you can even call them translations.
I am not going to name them, but you will always find these are not also published in hardback also and are paperback versions only, published by a very small little known publisher.

very important you get a good translation, a lot can get lost in translation. Picked up a good book at borders for a buck, Bushido- samurai ethics and the soul of japan by Inazo Nitobe.

Always focus the tip of your blade on the opponents eyes.
The eyes mirror the soul.
When he nods his head strike it!!

Musashi,
precept 28, from the Fire book of the big Orange Gorin no Sho, paperback pocket version. :)

BTW, this post was a inside joke for goose and bobO, it was never meant to be serious.

Also, for any who liked "Hagakure", I would like to recommend the movie "Ghost Dog, Way of the Samurai"
It is about a modern day inner city hit man, who lives his life according to the precepts of the "Hagakure"
This movie brings the precepts expounded in the "Hagakure" to life, how they applied in a modern day interpertation of them.
And it is a damn good movie also, one that I have watched many times.

I agree Dot, it was a very good movie, and kinda shows us how we could (or should) apply it to modern life.

Viking Etiquette 101;

Always allow your opponent to swallow his ale before you cleave his skull in twain.
This way he won't spit any ale in your face as your axe splits his skull!

See Illmade, I know the sagas too!! :dwarf:
