OH lordy, goose those are beautiful.Actually goose this saber is almost girlie like in heft but that could be because it is so well balanced. You could almost fence with this blade. If I had to go against something like a small sword,I would grab this sword over all my others.Very quick and nimble is this sword. And the point is,well, very pointy.

Hey fire
I'd name that first sword in this group " Maiden of the Woods" cool name, very nice picture, (i mean that in a nice way) eye contact, good background, interesting texture in the pock marked tree , rough bark of cedar tree in foreground opposit of the young maiden's skin, a hint of a breeze in the flowing purple gown. well done !

I used the manufacturers name as part of mine. That one is my Goddess of Chaos. And actually using that pic the way I did is kind of a joke in itself. It is 2 of my 3 most pretties. My wife and my favorite sword. The third would be my baby but shes still a bit young to play with swords.

PS- my tsuba/seppa project is now mounted on my Cheness KAZE kat i think it compliments the blade . it is my main cutter as it was cheap and durible . first is a pic of my materials check out that (big penny) as my grand-daughter says solid bronze

Firehand,
If I were you I would take that photo of your wife and have it tattoed on your back. Wonderful photo!!
Goose,
I love that seppa!! I you don't feel like cutting someone, you can always knock them out with your brass knuckles tsuba. Seriously, I like the tsuba!
Years ago, I worked in a custom light fab shop, they used to let us work on home projects [within reason]. I had access to to equipment that I'd give anything for now. They used to advertise as old world craftmanship[which it was] They had all sorts of obsolete equipment which you can no longer find.
We had the normal drills, milling machines and lathes, but also soldering and lead casting capabilities. Saws, welding and polishing plus finishing with the ability to antique metal. Not to mention the brass, bronze, copper and other semi-precious metals availible. You would have been in heaven, I was, unfortunately they closed years ago[as most american companies do]. A true tragedy!!

I too used to work with full machine shop support , i miss it terribly too, all the stuff i could do then now i must work with "rocks and sticks " . the drill press is so bad the entire mandrel wobbles the vise consists of me "c" clamping the piece down precariously
oh well more of a "hand crafted look "

Goose,
I think I read in another thread But I can't find it right now) that you were going to remove the tsuka from a Chen Practical tanto and make a new one, I want to try it myself but it seems like the metal mekugi is glued in or something it is so tight and I don't want to damage it by forcing it. Do you know? I love your work. thanks.
goose710
November 19th, 2007, 06:39 PM
jwilliams
yes i was gonna do that but didn't get around to it. the metal mekugi on mine removed easily, i just tapped it out
on the other hand i tried to remove tuska and was unable to remove it with a normal amount of force. i at that time was resigned to destroying that tuska and put it off for a bit till i gathered the proper materials and what not. so i kan't really give you an answer to your question other than mine came out no prob. (but i heard they're epoxied on)

Thank you "j" but i've found that when you turn a pleasure into a for profit venture it loses something in the process. Maybe i'm not the type to be a salesman, whatever the case i've been asked to make a knife for an individual and when told the "pure cost" of materials that person never asked again?? wether unable to pay or unwilling i was not approched again. I didn't wish to embaris any one if he couldn't afford it so i just gave it to him and he smiled . that was alright with me.

I agree with you 100%. Once you start making them for profit you lose some of your creativity because you want to meet demands and make the knife that everyone wants. Would rather someone gets them that appreciates the knife and treasures it. Great fit an finish on the knives Goose. The handles look great-what did you use on them?

I use a tung oil finish , when i use a finish . at times i just buff the wood till it shines and as i buff i add a wax to the wheel so as to heat it and seal it agaisnt moisture.

bobO
January 8th, 2008, 08:30 AM
This is a superbly balanced blade, they got that much right for sure.I just wonder if the blade tang is epoxied,If not I'm one little piece of metal away from a missile. It has that wonderful heft of a well balanced blade. Not wimpy at all.
Jason Moore
January 8th, 2008, 09:56 AM
I got a chance to play with the Corn Leaf yesterday when a customer on the phone wanted me to tell him how sharp it was. (not very) It really is a neat sword because it reminds me of a katana, but different. Very wieldy...
bobO
January 12th, 2008, 10:03 AM
Yeah not very sharp at all.I don't look at this as a cutting sword ,although it does cut surprising well.I think this is more for doing forms(KATA) with. But it is a good example of how the Chinese sharpen a blade.Starts off butter knife dull and gets sharper as it goes along.

VERY NICE! The stacked hilt knife style is hard to master but you got it down. BobO, I did a leather wrap on a katana the other day and have mixed feelings about it. Of course I saw a tanto by Wally Hayes that it looked absolutly awesome on. Leather for me was very diffcult to get good folds and looks akward over the menuki. Oh course this was the first time I used leather and proboly says more against me than the wrap. I have not used it yet so I do not know about the wear and tear aspect. I do like the battle wrap katana pictured and that type of wrap may look good with leather. Dont know just guessing.

Buffalo yes, Purple heart maybe, it looks like it, finishs like it, but it was given to me by an old friend, must have been twenty five years in his basement, isn't as purple as the stuff you can buy now. But it's HARD and close grained. The newer stuff is much courser grained .

Bobo, just a thought but you could acid etch a hamon on your bowie
bobO
February 29th, 2008, 08:08 PM
Well the big bowie is stainless. But I'm not a big fan of etching a blade, I have the Zen attitude of let it be what it is. I looked closely at the hamon on the zato and it looks like there are very small blisters on the steel, the result I think of the etching. Before I polished the blade of the Zato with Metal glo I carefully compared it's hamon again'st that of my ppk Tanto and they where the same in every way. After it's polish, the hamon on the zato was much different. It did leave a nice, temper line however. Yes Taygrd I said Temper line! ps, I did not alter the tanto in any way and if you do not want to change the appearance of your hamon in any way don't use Metal Glo on the hamon!
Brian Brazier
February 29th, 2008, 08:14 PM
Yeah I polished my PPKE with metal glow about 10 times repeatedly, now the hamon is perfect, you can see it but it isn't so in your face, very subdued, its nice

February 29th, 2008, 08:21 PM

He didn't have a price for this knife listed, but we can safely assume that it is between 2 to 3 thousand dollars. I think the one you posted is the best of the best. Every one must read this guys essay on "the way of blade smithing" It applies to everything, must reading. After reading this, it has reminded me that as we go thru life that change is inevitable, the one constant in the multi verse is change. But growth, that is optional, something that we must conscientiously choose.

I would have liked to seen that Goose! One of the things I was going to bring up in the zato reveiw, was that they use a milling machine(I think) when making the blade, and they go just a little to fast. You can see the tool marks on the blade if you look carefully. I tried to get a pic, but couldn't. I sometimes wonder what the Chinese idea of hand forged is, is it when the guy carrys the blanks by hand from one work station to another? PS. bobO threads are Zen threads, there is no off topic! Forgot, isn't it something how these guy's take that small billet of steel and turn it into things of such beauty. If your computer keeps logging you off, [your computer keeps logging you off! don't have a funny sound to it>:)] anyway if your computer keeps logging you off during posts or whatever, when you sign in, make sure you check off the box "remember me?". That should solve the problem, don't feel bad it used to happen to me all the time, I don't know if it has something to do with our computers or cookies, etc. as it doesn't happen to everyone. Jason told me how to fix the problem with the check in the "remember me?" box, my computer hasn't logged off by itself since I started to use the "remember me?" check off.

I ran into a childhood friend awhile back, when we were young he was a out of control maniac most of the time, today they would have him all loaded up on Ritalin or something. The funny part is, today he is a millionaire, he says if they would have drugged him out as a kid, [like they do now] he doubts very much he would be where he's at today, as it would of destroyed his creativity and spirit. I believe many parents nowdays, rather than dealing with a wild child, would rather drug them out, than deal with them, never realising what they might be destroying in the future.

once i find the time to actually get into my tools and such, most likely this summer i, i'm going to either give it a lynch seed oil coat or i may leave it natural. i kinda like the pure natural look of that oaks grain, well really all grains XD. my one dilemma right now is making handles. maybe in a day or two you guys can gimme some ideas and see if you can solve how to attach them on the back. but what i sort of think it really cool is my shields shape actually original, i repilicated the point of the Zelda shield, but customized the swoops of the top part, i thought my self to be rather cleaver :) . as for the cheap o's which i didn't zoom into (cause i'm not proud of them) i'm glad u noticed the crappyness of them ahaha i must say though they came very very sharp and a great deal, though they may be bad their handy for bush waking like you had said.

Just a thought: I made a very large wall shield for my 3-d Art class at college, covered in 18-gauge steel, and part of a cookie sheet (haha). It's more ornamental as it weighs a good 5-6lbs. I'll get a picture up ASAP, but I used cloth as straps, and its not a handle as the weight would be too distorting. I used some 3-mm crafting foam to prevent the forearm getting rubbed against by the cloth and wood, then used large bolts that when through the front, with a depression in them to hide them under the plate of metal on the surface, to hold the cloth in..In total..the straps were held on with...4 large wood screws, 15 small screws...and the ornamental front design had over 700 gold nails in it.

I'll take New Zealand if you want. Oh and Spain...or Marshall of the Armies works just as well..
Back on topic:
I think the small screws were maybe 2cm? They were only meant as secondary support to the main wood screw..which are about 1 inch or so, give or take a little bit. But yeah, the large screws would hold it just fine, Just not look as pretty with it being so stretched. The crafting foam works great for what I did. As for the depth of the large screws? I used a larger drill bit to make it just barely enough so the head doesn't protrude through the sheet metal. Sadly I have no tips for metal...although instead of the second cloth strap...try maybe a simple door handle? You would need small wood blocks for that, to make it stick out just enough for your hand to slip through..but then there's the question of it being comfortable..
Anybody have tips on making a Pauldron? Also ideas on straps for Grieves would be good...I have a small bracer that's quite tough too, but that used simple snaps which wouldnt be enough for the grives...I would say body armor using the same steel (Which is actually ventillation ductwork) but I doubt anyone here would have used it for that.
No answers as to what the symbol is?

well the symbols got me, yet i'm by far no historian of any sort. but thx for those measurements i may do that as for the handle i think i'm going to try making a wooden handle from scratch. i've already started and it's slowly taking shape but won't be done till summer most likely. due to much procrastination.

There you go Brian...it's the LL Dragon from the 8K series,1 of 500 made in various combinations of blade length,Bo Hi or not, color of Same',Ito and carving on Saya...so it may be unique but I no longer have it as I sold it just before the ban on production 'Samurai Swords'...which has now been lifted to some degree.
I understand that the same tsuba is being used on a different edition now.

Hey fire
I'd name that first sword in this group " Maiden of the Woods" cool name, very nice picture, (i mean that in a nice way) eye contact, good background, interesting texture in the pock marked tree , rough bark of cedar tree in foreground opposit of the young maiden's skin, a hint of a breeze in the flowing purple gown. well done !

yea thats a small sleave that came with my set of paul chen practical pluses thats the katana wakasashi and tanto now with the ito being leather i use the sleave on the handles to stop the oils and sweat from my hands soaking into the leather and ruining it you,ll find theres individual sleaves for the sayas as well actualy youll find its not a bad idea to make one for your self plus a open leather sleeve for use on the blades if you handle yours a lot stops the ito from getting grubby and the leather sleeve stops you leaving prints on the steel which could turn rusty if not cleaned properly might save your fingers too oh forgot my avatar is my two handed chinese jian you cansee a one handed one being used on utube to cut through a 2 inch thick tree branch and not forgeting my one handed chinese jian used inthe chinese film called fearless beautifull highly polished carbon steel blade indian rosewood scabbard and handle and real solid brass fittings in a red silk covered wooden box and a yellow silk liner with red tassles nicccccceeeeeee

Where to begin
you have a wonderful collection of swords/knives/et al
It's a collection to be proud of for sure.! i love the purple (trisho, my discription) and the beautiful box it came in
also the Ayabusa daisho wonderful!
must take a week to clean and oil them . do you have a set schedule? order of cleaning?
I start with the ones on my coffee table then the book case then the wall etc always the same sets in a row, this way if i get called away i know where to begin again. seems silly i suppose but i don't want to overlook any !.
How long have you been acquiring these beauties?
intotal how many do you own? and do you sell, trade up?(i have no interest, just curious) i think it is a natural course to trade/up for a better/higher quality item(no matter the hobby) as it matures as an interest or hobby.
Thank you for sharing that wonderful collection with us all, i'm sure you'll get tons of questions
