Brian & bob-O,
I said it before and I'll say it again.
If we brought back Musashi [by magic] to the present and had him do a video on YouTube, probably 50% of the comments would be negative.
I could see it now;
post 1; Who does that guy think he is? Musashi?
post 2; Uh,.......he is Musashi.
post 1; No, no, no, no, he holding his sword wrong and his stance isn't right!!
post 2; How do you know?
post 1; I read it, in the Book of 5 rings!!!
post 3; Besides that, this guy claims, he learned all things without a teacher!
Another self taught nut, How can he be claiming to do a Koryu, without lineage?
post 2; Uh,........BUT, he is Musashi!
post 1; Naw, the real Musashi would look better than that, I seen it in a movie!!
I am sure you catch my drift by now, those make believe comments would just be the printable ones, the real ones would be laced with profanity.
Since the introduction of the Internet, people have become rude and obnoxious. Because of the anonimty of the Internet, it is as Ben said, people will say things, they would never have the courage to say face to face.
Much like little kids teasing on the playground!
But, instead of "Don't hit me! [for teasing] I'll tell the the teacher!!"
Now it's " The martial arts aren't about violence and proving yourself, it's about personal enlightenment!"
Hmmmmm,.......... I never knew personal enlightenment consisted of being a petty back biting coward!!
Believe me I can say a whole lot more, but I will leave it as is.
Judge for yourself, use your own opinion.
post 1; Now this is what a real Koryu looks like!!!
post 2; Uh,.......They look rather stiff and lifeless to me
post 1; That's because they don't show the real techniques, they are secret
post 2; Oh, but look at this other guy, isn't he moving in ways that would be secret to the other guys?
post 1; Naw, just because he is moving and cutting in a realistic manner don't have nothing to do with it.
post 2; Oh!!!!!???
As I said, we all have a brain! Don't let other people dictate what your thoughts should be.[in anything] But also remember this, Bruce Lee said, take the best, discard the rest. Well, you have to actually learn something, before you can discard it. Bruce Lee learned the entire Wing Chun system and many others before he made this statement. I have a lot of people ask me to teach them MA.Not gonna happen.I tell them I'll teach them self defense and when it don't look like what they see in the movies they lose interest.now I just tell them to buy a baseball bat. When someone asks me if so and so style is any good I just tell them sure good stuff. What I don't tell them is if they study so and so style for a year or so and then get in a fight with ANY descent street fighter, there gonna get there #ss handed to them!My thoughts on martial arts are there for fighting and winning.I have 4 brothers at 6'2' 210 I'm a medium, our style of conflict resolution was, the last one standing, had resolved the conflict!I remember studying a leaping side kick for a year, thinking it was awesome.Tried it on my older bro. There I am flying thru the air, kick perfect, thinking GOT HIM,he reached up slapped my foot. The ground never felt so hard. What master Lee said was right on,as is what you say Dotinuki. If I where to send my kid to a dojo these days it would be for discipline, exercise and basic mechanic's.When he learned those ,then I would teach him to fight.PS.I never even heard of J.W until about 9 months ago,but what I've seen on you tube looked good to me?PSS. The Chinese have a saying,It's one thing to grab a tiger by the tail,It's another thing altogether to let go!

Haha, the swords used are probably katanas. :P In Korea, there are manufacturers of Japanese-styled katanas but with slight variations. Usually a Korean-styled katana has a shorter blade (maybe 2-4 inches shorter than an average Japanese Katana), and for the ray skin, other materials are used such as leather, and I have seen a lot of Korean styled katanas without a hamon and is just a mirror-polished blade. In older times of Korea, at one point, Koreans combined the concept of a Chinese and Japanese sword together. It would have a curved blade like a katana, but a very short handle like a Chinese sword (meant for one handed use). When I went to visit my family in Korea two years ago, I went to a Korean museum and they had displays of old Korean swords, and everything I say is information I learned from when I went to the museum.

If this is on the forum already, sorry, I must have missed it. I look at this and am in awe; not so much at the ritual or speed, but more so at the clean cuts. These are those type cuts where you see the Coyote keep walking after Bugs or the Roadrunner run him through some sharp obstacle or machine; he falls apart slowly with the "WHAT JUST HAPPENED" look.

A few things to make good note of is that Klaas Sensei get Hi on a sword with no bo hi. That is a well made sword with propper geometry and a good user. Good demo of seitei kata as well as some of the toyama 8 and a koryu kata. Tatami omote compared to the Wara williams cuts is ALMOST half as dense as tatami omote that Klaas Sensei cuts. Also with mats like those that are VERY large in diameter they are more solid and fall slower.... Obata sensei called cutting Wara and goza is like cutting "Tofu"..... I am not saying williams does not have skill, but there is more smoke and mirror than people notice :)

Interesting Videos.
Ricky, I notice on the first video, it said you designed the blade.
As far as the "smoke and mirrors" thing, there are many tricks that may be employed to make a demo look better. On a video, only the maker of his own videos knows for sure.
The trained eye sees differently than the backyard cutter.
Often studying how the performer moves and executes, rather than how the straw cut.
Ricky Arias
February 2nd, 2009, 12:38 AM
Yes Klaas Sensei had an idea for a sword and what he wanted to do and I had the task of making it real. As for the smoke and mirror comment.... That video was done with 9 mats! The 3 mat cut and the double tatami mizu gaeshi make 5 mats alone. Then the triple cut and then the rokudan giri at the end makes 7. 2 mats were botched due to the attempt of a few harder cuts, but their left overs can be seen in the first cutting shots in the video.
The reason why Kata is shown is as Dotanuki said. Showing skill. I do not enjoy UBC because anyone can just cut, but taneshigiri is more than cutting and they do not get that. I even have seen a few try Iai and it is a joke. Klaas sensei has been at this for 10 years and it shows... No his form is not perfect nor is Hataya in the second video, I do not think I have ever seen perfect form, but there is good form and bad...
wara are confidence builder mats and not much more....

I belong to UBC, and that's the point, anyone can cut. And I do get Tamashigiri in all it's aspects. Even how to spell it. Except this time ( check out how I spelled tameshigiri)
Firehand10k
February 2nd, 2009, 08:34 AM
I agree with bobO. I am a backyard cutter too and I know that there is a huge difference between what I do and the art of tamashigiri, but what I do is fun. I understand that there are many personal benefits to learning such an art properly but don't really need them.
All I want to do at this point is have fun cutting things up. I know alot will probably hate my wording, but my swords are some of my favorite toys. I know they are dangerous toys that must be respected and handled correctly, lest they turn on me, like any toys for men (motorcycles, super-cars, power-tools).
Dotanuki

The problem is finding a happy medium, Those making true martial art videos of Tameshigiri, are often nitpicked and critisized to death for their performance by other rival martial artists.
Remember what I said about Musashi coming back from the dead to make a cutting video, people would say he is doing this or that wrong.
People are looking to critisize, not enjoy the performance.
Martial artists often look down on backyard cutters, but many times the backyard cutter has no one but themselves to blame, because many of these videos would make anyone cringe. I could never understand why someone thinks I would want to watch a video of someone swinging at water bottles and missing the majority of the time.
My favorite cutting video?
Bob-O and Menukisan's video of 'dueling katanas', Two guys that know how to cut, responsibly cutting in the backyard, having the time of their lives. And then shooting afterwards!
Life don't get any better than that!
Male Bonding!
Not trying to show each other up, just having a good time.
I would of given anything to be there with these two men, I think people don't understand the meaning of brotherhood in the warrior arts, as this was it, displayed in it's truest form.
I even enjoyed the bucket cut! It was like watching your friend getting french kissed by your grandmother when he came to visit!
Something you can tease him about, to the end of time! =))

HC makes a very good point.
One of the most irksome things on other Forums is when they jump on someone or make fun of them for spelling terminolgy wrong.
I notice many of our posters have a hard time spelling the english lanquage let alone Japanese.
Remember this also!
Sometimes the written word does not always come across as the way it was intended. It can easily be misinterperted. I know mine has been numerous times.
I believe Ricky was more trying to impress rather than insult.
It may have just came out wrong.
I may be wrong, but give him a chance.
If he really wanted to insult backyard cutters, he would more welcome on a elite forum where they delight in that sort of thing. Why come here and do that?
Where all are welcome!
You guys are my friends, do we really want to behave in a confrontational manner off the bat?
Now, if he persists, that is another thing.
You do know, this a touchy subject for me anyway, especially after the trollish behavior of some of the past posters.
So think about it.
BTW, I have seen Iai performed by those who proclaimed themselves masters that was a joke, not just backyard cutters! What is worse?

Seriously though, I probably know Travis better than most here, I respect his opinions. I was wondering about his rather acid response, as it seemed strange.
Travis, you even caught me off guard on that one! It would help in the future if you would give more of a explanation, for those who don't know what is going on, and so you don't look like the bad guy.
It would help if you would of been a little more diplomatic untill we knew what was going on.
Travis is a lot like me, we have a hard time being diplomatic when dealing with other martial artists. Especially when we don't respect them.
With the advent of the Internet, many say and get away with statements they would never get away with in person.
Now that I'm older, it don't bother me as much when I was younger, when I would be ready to travel out of state to confront someone. I would be like Travis "Yeah, I said it! So What?!!"

Dotanuki, you never fail to amaze me. I for my part was just tryimg to point out the obvious, as far as UBC. As a native new yorker if some one throws down the gauntlet, you put a rock in it, pick it up and hit them with it. I see things on UBC that make me cringe, but there's many people there to put those few back on track. Very few advertise there ryu, and most that do, are qualified to do so. No big deal. OH and I don't think of cutting bottles and such as Tameshigiri, just cutting.

A rope? That won't stop the rabid New Yorkers! (well...certain more rabid than others ;)) You need something more like an electrified length of steel cable or chain with enough voltage to stop a horse.
Just a personal thought: takin' shots at people, unless it's common knowledge, is probably a bad idea on forums. Even if it's joking it leads to problems. I also was confused, but since I don't know many of you here that well, I kept my mouth shut (not able to stick my foot in it as easily, ya know?) But it's all talked out, so it's all good.

Did not think I was so popular. I like many people have a hard list of bad posts. Some of those posts date back almost 6 years when I was a backyard cutter. I moved past that and wanted more. Probem with MOST UBC is that they do not and think what they do form wise is good as is because of comments from people who do not know what propper form is. Most of the people who spoke ill years ago did not have much to say after a face to face and a hand shake. Training with people you dont like is a good way to clear bad air. It puts people on the same level and you are left with just simple game of physical chess where what you think does not matter.
Its kinda like that movie "your the worst pirate I have ever heard of"..... " but you have heard of me".... When I went to token kai and tai kai I was suprised to find that people knew me and my work. Most had good to say and that is enough for me.
As far as being cross that has more to do with the fire of public forum than anything. If I was so cross with travis I would not have offered to cove sword work to help him move a sword that he has. Even after he commented he dd not think the blade I had for sale ( just sold for 3k ) had skilled work done to it. I do not have a problem with him. Our experienc just leads us to different things in terms of thinking when it comes to swords.
Let me just thank those level headed people. I have not recieved such kindness from stragers in some time :)
