What is the proper term for this type of saya? Is there a certian function to it or is it cosmetic? The blade is straight and this has a sort of a lobster tail. Thankshttp://www.jswords.com/tanto/tanto_002/DSC_0523-.jpg

Dang, this is on the tip of my tongue, but yes, the little thingie is there to hold the saya to the muwashi or obi. ie, the belt. Think that's right, my reference material is packed away.

Tsunakuchi,Kaishizuno,Soritsana,Saguri and Saka-zuno are 5 different names I've found so far for the 'obi hook'.:)
No idea if there's a specific name for the shape of the saya though but I expect there is one.

Thanks Mako and BobO, I have seen a few sayas in the Tanto koshirae that have that paddle look at the end and was curious. The obi hook should be how far from the kurikata? Depending on how my luck and skill hold out I may try this on my current project~X(. Thanks again

The standard obi width is 4", but they are not hooked in a vertical position, but diagonally, so I quess You would probably have to play with it, unless someone else knows for sure.

Here is my current project. Dotanuki- great point about the hook and the diagonal. I am going to see if I have the energy and gumption to try it on this one. At some point you get to where you want it done and one more component is enough to push you over the edge. I will sleep on it. Thanks fellas for tracking down the name for me, I looked without sucess but I know the Distinguished Gentlemen can find it:detective:.

I've found the style of saya but I don't know if the terminology of the blade would apply to it.

I am going to see if one of my family members who knows how to braid will make me some sageo like that, it would really look nice on the Bushido set I am getting, especially since they will have the Jabara Makai which is also braided

Brain that would look great. I love that style sageo and have been cruising the fabric stores rubbing elbow with all the bluehairs looking for something similiar. Let us know how it goes.
BobO I do appreciate and want your input, Thanks brother.
Mako, thanks agian for all of your help, we got the best Mods.
