It really depends on what you want it for, and what your budget is, I bought a couple of the BYO swords last year for myself and my GF. I'm not a kat person so it was all I really wanted, for the money they weren't bad and kind of fun to put together. I'm sure the staff here can give you all the info you need.

Welcome to the Forum, I haven't owned anything like that, but according to the reviews it is a great value.

Jason, Welcome to the forum. The best beginers swords are the wooden kind, called bokken.

Welcome to the forum. I see that you have gotten some great advise already. I like the assemble kits since it gives you the opportunity to see how the swords are put together-takes the mystery out of it. Enjoy!

welcome to the forum Jayson, that particular assemble yourself katana is't all that bad... i have both the dragon and the mantis. If your planning on getting one of those i would go with the mantis, it handles better and has a better point of balance making it more manuvrable. To be honest though if you want a good begginer sword i would go with a Masahiro, the Musashi and the Fuji are very nice. The fittings are m uch tigher and the ito ( handle wrap ) is going to be much better quality so down the line it will last you longer. They also have a better cutting ability. For the extra tenty bucks its a big improvment. Not only are they better swords but they're more appealing to the eye as well. Hope this helps and good luck with your first buy.

I would go with the assemble yourself katana out of those two swords.
