This is the only samurai movie that i own. I don't count the Cruise movie anyways. But I was wondering how accurate is this movie compared to the real life of Musashi Miyamoto?

The Samurai Trilogy is acutally 5 movies, but they cut it down for the criterion collection, you can get all 5 here http://www.samuraidvd.com/mm.asp, I do not own these but I know it is suppose to be one long movie and that it was a let down for some, I do still plan to buy all of them

I have the Trilogy, and it was a major letdown. Let me say I am a major fan of Mifune, and the filming and color were great, but the story was dull and plodding.

Save your money, this was the only good part in all 3 films;

The implication of this fight was, Musashi carved the oar in the boat to defeat Kojiro's use of a longer than normal Katana [O-gatana].

hiead, as far as these movies being accurate, well nobody knows, they actually made him very 'normal' in these movies. the other stories of his life are quite wild and more interesting. [and more believable, in my estimazation].
The alternate version on the fight above, has Musashi carving the oar in the boat, when he gets to the beach [late as usual] he jumps out of the boat, runs up to Kojiro, smashes in his skull with the oar, and bam fight over!! Gets back in the boat and leaves, [big disappointment for the spectators]. Given Musashi's aggresive nature, this is the story I choose to believe.
Do some research, as I said the other versions of his life are more interesting and sometimes quite fanciful.

That story of the boat oar is reminds me of the Suburi Bokken, which is said to be modeled after Musashi's boat oar, the added size of the Bokken is great for strength training

i guess that bokken-smashed skull is what made Sasaki and Musashi both famous. it's just interesting to note that Musashi started out as a delinquent instead of being born from an elite samurai clan

I have heard that same version, he gets up late, doesn't bother cleaning himself up, carves a bokken on the ride there, bashes his opponents skull in, and is on his way. Not the way I would have done it, but he seemed to know what he was doing:)

I remember the story of Musashi on a boat ride, and there is a loud mouthed hooligan on the boat. He keeps saying what a great warrior he is and then notices and starts picking on Musashi. The hooligan says to Musashi what is your sword style? Musashi replied "no sword". The hooligan made fun of Musashi and started getting worked up. He then challenged Musashi. They landed on a nearby Island and the hooligan jumped out and said "lets see your style of no Sword". Musashi jumped back in the boat and with a mighty push on the oar, sent the boat back into the water leaving the hooligan stranded on the island.

Excuse me if all of the details are not here, I remember reading that somewhere a long time ago.

I don't believe that was Musashi, but it is a great story nevertheless.

If you remember this is the story that they 'borrowed' for the movie "Enter the Dragon" with Bruce Lee. Although I must agree with Red, that I don't believe this was a Musashi story [could be wrong]. Most stories about Musashi have him dislocating his enemies mentality beforehand, but in most stories he is always too aggresive to ever let a fight go by.

Hi Guys,

To say these are action films, is like saying Kill Bill was a Budo training video. I had already ordered these from Netflix when I saw this thread. It really needed to be kept up front for the good of sword buying, Samaurai film watching universe.

I guess that will be one of my many missions here, from now on. :flaming:

First off, nobody here got what the films were for, these were somebodys home movies that were made into a soap opera. When that did not work, they added some incomplete fight scenes in, and called it a Samaurai film, figuring we were all to drunk after practice to catch what they had done.

Well, I found the TRUE VALUE of these films. For the first time in many years, I have been able to get to sleep early because of these films. I have suffered from insomnia for a very long tome, but no longer. I set my machine to continuous loop play and sleep all night like a baby; waking refreshed with minty fresh breath and happy little birds singing outside my bedroom window even!
What a godsend! The Holy Grail of non-narcotic sleep aids!

If you think we are too juvenile over here, and you really belong back at SFI, then these are the movies for you! :duel:
